Terror in the Waters

We were having so much fun in the blazing, hot sun at Kaiteriteri. We were put into groups of five. There was Zac, Hendrix, Jaiden, Jackson, and me in our group. We were kayaking with our teacher.

We went far from land and we went around an island. We saw something move in the calm, still water. It was a seal. We saw another thing move in the calm water. It was a shark. It stared at us for a long time. We saw its deep, dark little eyes.

Suddenly the shark moved quickly to the side. We were trying to see where it went, but we couldn’t see the shark any more.

We all sat in the kayaks, extremely still. We could even hear our own heartbeats beating against our chests.

The kayaks were swaying side-to-side roughly as the shark came under our teacher’s kayak. It hit her. She was knocked out of her kayak.
As the shark came beneath her she was swimming as fast as she could for land. The shark bit her legs, and then she slowly sunk to the bottom of the sea.

We were screaming and trying to get away from the shark as a current came and swept us away out further to the middle of the ocean. We couldn’t see the land any more.

Night crept in closer and closer. Luckily I had some rope in the back of my kayak. We tied some rope to each other’s kayaks. When it was dark we realised Jackson was not there, only half of his kayak was. We were all was extremely scared then.

Then we saw an old rusty creaky fishing boat that smelt like fish. It came towards us slowly.

A voice said, “Where are you from kids?”

We replied, “From Motueka.”

“I’m from there too. Shall I take you there?”

We said, “Yes please!”
“I’ll take you to the boat ramp and we will see if we can find your families,” he said, kindly.

When we got to the boat ramp our Mums and Dads were so happy to see us safely home.

We were glad that we were alive, but we couldn’t enjoy it. We felt bad as we watched our teacher’s family crying on the beach, and Jackson’s mum and dad hugging and crying on the boat ramp.
